BISP Payments to Go Digital from Ramazan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a major digital transformation in Pakistan’s social welfare system. Starting this Ramazan, all Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) payments will be disbursed through digital wallets instead of cash marking the beginning of a new era in Pakistan’s shift toward a cashless economy.

10 Million Digital Wallets to Be Activated
During a high-level meeting in Islamabad, officials informed the premier that 10 million digital wallets under BISP will be operational by the end of this month.
These wallets will allow beneficiaries to:
- Receive BISP payments directly into their digital accounts.
- Make payments for electricity, gas, and other services through Raast QR codes.
- Withdraw funds easily through partner banks and mobile applications.
This digital system will eliminate the need for manual cash collection and reduce the risk of corruption and payment delays.
Promoting a Cashless Pakistan
PM Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that digital payments will enhance transparency and efficiency, helping Pakistan align with the global digital economy trend.
He added that the early focus on digital transformation is now producing real progress — boosting economic governance and financial inclusion.
Currently, 68% of Pakistan’s population has achieved financial inclusion, and the government aims to further expand this number in 2025.
Raast QR Codes and Digital Banking
The meeting also reviewed progress on Raast integration and digital banking licenses:
- Electricity and gas bill payments are now being facilitated through Raast QR codes, enabling billions in digital transactions.
- A mobile app for government services in Islamabad has been fully linked with Raast, allowing citizens to make quick and secure online payments.
- Retail outlets across Pakistan have begun using QR codes to promote digital purchases.
- Work is also underway to expand digital banking licenses, a major step toward financial inclusion.
Government Targets and Stakeholders
The Prime Minister praised the efforts of the Finance Ministry, Ministry of IT, FBR, State Bank of Pakistan, and NADRA for their “commendable work.”
He directed all departments to meet the digital transition targets within defined timelines, ensuring that every BISP beneficiary can access digital payments securely and conveniently.
